Broken leg won't stop Derga rep Cheah Soon Hai from defending seat

ALOR SETAR: Derga assemblyman Dr Cheah Soon Hai is still going about his official duties despite being on two months medical leave after he broke his right leg in December.

Dr Cheah fell into a 0.5m-deep drain at the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport while sending off Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Dec 20.

With two metal rods in the affected leg and walking on crutches, Dr Cheah, who is Kedah Gerakan chairman, went about his routine of meetings with party members and attending to the people's grouses at his home in Taman Lam Sun here.

"People's representatives cannot take leave. My assistants drop by frequently to discuss work and people are always bringing their problems here," he told a press conference.

Although he cannot drive and be active as usual, it has not stopped him from serving the people as he is confident of their support for him and feels it should be maintained.

"I'm confident of defending this area in the general election based on the community's response, which appreciates my service and the central government's development here," he said.

In the previous general election, Dr Cheah beat PKR's Cheung Khai Yan and Teoh Teik Guan from DAP.

As of December last year, Derga has more than 26,400 voters.

Dr Cheah also informed that the more than 200 traders at the Teluk Wanjah market here, better known as 'Cowboy Market', will move to a temporary site after Chinese New Year to make way for the construction of a new RM7.5mil market due for completion in two years. - Bernama
