GEORGE TOWN: More than 120 policemen are involved in the search operation for seven fugitives who escaped while being taken to court in Butterworth on Monday.

The air wing unit from Bukit Aman and personnel from the General Operation Force have also been roped in to scour the area in Tasek Gelugor.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said Tuesday they believed the fugitives were still in the state, adding that they were also investigating the source of the curry powder used for the escape.

On Monday, detainees being taken to the Butterworth court complex in a police van threw chilli powder at policemen who were guarding them, before escaping with the vehicle.

The van was later found abandoned in a village. Two detainees were picked up nearby and taken to the court here but seven others escaped.
