Couple to sue hospital over death of newborn
By IVAN LOH
IPOH: A couple's joy in welcoming their newborn turned to sorrow when the boy died less than a day later, allegedly due to the medical negligence of a private hospital here.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad employee Mohd Helmi Mohd Isa, 30, said his wife Norehan Abdul Hassan gave birth to Muhammad on April 13 last year at about 5.19pm.
"The doctors told us that he was in a healthy condition and we were overjoyed.
"I managed to give him a peck and took a photograph before he was taken back to the maternity ward," Mohd Helmi told journalists here after filing a writ of summons at the High Court here Wednesday.
"My wife and I had not even had the opportunity to hold him in our arms," he added.
Lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz, who is representing the couple, said a hospital employee had allegedly caused the death of the baby by giving him the wrong medication.
"At about 11.45pm on the same day, a doctor informed Mohd Helmi that a staff member had injected the baby with syntometrine," he said.
(Syntometrine is typically given to the mother after the birth of the child to cause the uterus to contract.)
"Both Mohd Helmi and his wife were stopping from seeing their child, who was in critical condition," he added.
Mohd Khairul said the baby was only rushed to another hospital the next day at about 9am.
"At 5.15pm, a doctor from the hospital informed Mohd Helmi that his baby had died at about 5.05pm.
"A post-mortem report showed that the baby had died of organ failure with head injuries," he added.
Mohd Khairul said the couple would be suing the hospital and a summons would be issued within a week.
