MAS introduces free extra 10kg

PETALING JAYA: Passengers flying Malaysia Airlines will get an additional 10kg free checked baggage and reduced excess baggage charges for all classes.

Under the new baggage guidelines all adult and child passengers will enjoy 30, 40, and 50kg free baggage allowances for travel on economy, business and first class respectively.

These changes apply to all travel from Feb 14.

MAS said it was introducing these benefits on all its flights that used the weight system for checked baggage, but it was not applicable for travel to and from Los Angeles where charges were based on the piece system.

MAS group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said it simplified the excess baggage rates to introduce a consistent policy for passengers that delivered significant savings.

Charges for checked baggage weights that exceed the new free allowance will be calculated depending on travel zone, with a fixed rate for every 5kg excess weight.

The excess rate for each 5kg will be RM30, RM60 and RM90 respectively depending on the zone of travel.

In Malaysia, the rate of RM30 applies for the zone within Malaysia and Asean countries.

RM60 applies for zones beyond Malaysia and Asean, covering destinations in India, China, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and Australia.

The intercontinental rate of RM90 will be charged on all travel between Malaysia and the cities of Jeddah, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Istanbul.

MATTA president Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun lauded the move, saying it would definitely boost travel.

“There have been times where people have had to reduce their baggage at the airport or pay through the nose for it,” he said.

He hoped MAS would not raise its ticket prices to deal with a heavier baggage load as it would not be fair to passengers.
