PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will increase his number of visits to the various states in the coming days in what is seen as the “final lap” before he calls for the much anticipated general election.

Between today and the end of the month, the Prime Minister will be criss-crossing the country almost every day to not only meet the rakyat but is also likely to make some final assessment and tie up loose ends before seeking the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's consent to dissolve Parliament.

The Prime Minister has until April 27 to dissolve Parliament.

A senior politician said while Najib had been making many visits to the states since last year, this was likely to be the last round before the general election.

“My take is that he is doing his last rounds (of visits). After all, it is almost time for the elections. Najib will want to gauge the situation and iron out issues one last time,” said the politician.

Najib will be in Johor today where he will celebrate Chinese New Year with the community in Kulaijaya and also launch the Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia project.

He will head to Sabah for a two-day visit beginning tomorrow, where he is expected to have a closed-door session with state Barisan Nasional leaders before attending programmes in Beaufort, Papar and Tuaran on Thursday.

On Friday, Najib will be in Ipoh to open the Urban Transformation Centre and will head for Seri Iskandar after Friday prayers to attend a programme themed Mengubah destini orang asli (Changing the destiny of orang asli).

The Prime Minister will attend the Malaysia-Singapore Leaders Retreat in the island republic on Feb 18 and he is expected to make a pit-stop in Johor Baru the next day to take a look at the developments going on in Nusajaya and Iskandar Malaysia.

He will spend some time in Sarawak from Feb 20 till 22 to attend various programmes in Kuching and Miri and then head to Terengganu on Feb 23 for a one-day visit where his itinerary will include the Jelajah Janji Ditepati programme.

On Feb 24, the Prime Minister will be in Kuala Pilah, Negri Sembilan, to attend a meet-the-people programme.
