Veterans in SUPP will help lead young bloods to victory

KUCHING: Works Deputy Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng has assured that all SUPP veteran leaders, including himself, will help the new young candidates win their election debuts.

He said he was glad that the party had taken a bold move of introducing young bloods to go for battle in the coming parliamentary elections.

“It is good for the future of the party and I hope all the new candidates would win in their respective seats.

“The veterans in SUPP, including myself, will certainly help them from behind to ensure victory for the party and Barisan Nasional,” he said at his Chinese New Year open house in Kuching on Sunday.

Yong said all new candidates had the fighting chances to win their seats and therefore, advised them to work hard from now.

He also believed that all new picks were capable, committed and ready to serve the people.

SUPP had nominated new faces Tan Kai for Bandar Kuching, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin (Stampin), Vincent Lau Li Meng (Sibu) and Datuk Sebastian Ting (Miri) as well as incumbents Datuk Tiong Thai King (Lanang), Ding Kuong Hiing (Sarikei) and Datuk Richard Riot (Serian).

Yong is currently serving his fifth term as Stampin MP.

He entered Parliament in 1990 for the Padawan seat and was immediately appointed the Parliamentary Secretary.

Although seen as the party’s most winnable candidate for Stampin by many, the 71-year-old SUPP veteran was adamant about his decision to retire.

“I stand by my decision made three years ago. The Chief Minister (Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud) knows I want to retire too,” he said.

SUPP won in six of the seven constituencies namely Stampin, Serian, Sibu, Lanang, Sarikei and Miri in the 2008 parliamentary polls.

The party, however, lost Sibu to DAP in the 2010 by-election following the demise of its MP and former deputy transport minister Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew.
