KUCHING: A multi-car pile-up happened at midnight on Sunday near Masterskill Institution at Jalan Batu Kawah caused by a mentally challenged 12-year-old girl who was dancing in the middle of the road.

First, the drivers of a Honda and a Perodua Kelisa, who tried avoiding hitting the girl, crashed. Soon after that, a few other drivers almost crashed at the same spot.

The drivers, who were naturally angry with the girl, demanded for her name and the names of her parents.

A passer-by, Chiam Ming Howe, 40, from Desa Wira who happened to be going home after visiting a temple, saw the accidents.

He got out of his car and after he understood what had transpired, explained to the drivers that it was useless to be angry with the mentally ill girl who did not understand the situation.

He then brought the girl to Simpang Tiga Police Station.

It was around 1.30am yesterday, after a few hectic hours of calling friends and relatives, that the girl’s 42-year-old father from Jalan Kangking lodged a report at Batu Kawah police station.

To his great relief, the father, who refused to have his name revealed, was told by the police that a mentally ill girl was hopping around the Simpang Tiga police station.

“It was my mistake not to have paid attention to my daughter during my visit. Without our knowing, she ran out the gate which was opened around 11pm and we had been looking for her since then. I am happy that I’ve got my daughter back,” he said.

He had also settled the matter of the accidents with the irate drivers.
