Psy dines at Korean BBQ outlet before taking off
GEORGE TOWN: After a whirlwind 18-hour visit to the country, South Korean superstar Psy left Penang in a private jet.
Despite the brief visit, Psy managed to enjoy a meal at the Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant in Jalan Tanjung Tokong.
A source said that soon after his performance at the state Barisan Nasional Chinese New Year open house, he went to rest at his luxury suite in Evergreen Laurel Hotel at 1pm.
At about 4.40pm, he made his way to the restaurant, about 10 minutes from the hotel.
Word got out about his presence there and soon a group of fans, many of them Korean nationals, waited eagerly outside the place.
According to the fans, Psy waved at them but he was immediately escorted into the restaurant.
His bodyguards did not allow him to shake hands or pose for photographs.
As the crowd began to swell outside the restaurant, Psy’s bodyguards resorted to “creative ways” to lead him out of the building without being mobbed.
Apparently, he managed to leave only after 7.30pm.
It is learnt that his private jet took off at 1.44am yesterday.
Psy arrived in Penang at 7.10am on Monday after a 20-hour flight from Brazil, where he had performed at the Salvador Carnival.
It was his first visit to the country and he performed at the open house at the Han Chiang High School field before an estimated 80,000 people.
Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, is expected to perform in Malaysia again on March 16 at the Future Music Festival Asia 2013 in Kuala Lumpur.
State MCA secretary Lau Chiek Tuan said the open house was a success as it attracted a large crowd who persevered under the hot sun for Psy’s performance.
State Barisan Youth chief and event organising chairman Oh Tong Keong said he was happy with the massive turnout.
“So many people came despite the hot sun and they stayed on to watch the cultural performances even after Psy left the venue. The turnout is definitely a boost to our morale with the general election looming,” he said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak reiterated in a tweet on Monday that “Psy’s performance did not involve public money at all”.
