Ministries working closely to ensure horsemeat not supplied to hypermarkets
KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry is working closely with the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry to address the horsemeat scandal.
Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said this was to ensure that horsemeat was not supplied to hypermarkets here.
She said although hypermarkets are placed under her ministry, the meat and dairy products sold had to pass through Agriculture Ministry first.
"We are working closely with them before making any endorsement as we want to take care of the consumers," she added.
Rohani was commenting on the horsemeat scandal which has swept across Britain, France and Sweden.
Some of the products involved are lasagne and spaghetti bolognese marketed in a number of hypermarkets including Tesco and Carrefour.
Meanwhile, Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd said its meat products are not sourced from European countries but used local beef or beef imported from India and Australia.
A Tesco Malaysia spokesman said the hypermarket did not sell products from the manufacturers involved.
"The safety and quality of our food is of the highest importance to Tesco and our customers who have the right to expect the highest standards.
"We will not tolerate any compromise in the quality of the food that we sell," she added. - Bernama
