More than 200,000 have pledged as organ donors since '97
KUALA LUMPUR: The number of people who have pledged to donate organs from 1997 to January this year has reached 214,687.
"This is positive development and near our target of 287,000 donors or 1% of the population," said Organ Donation Public Awareness Committee chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
The highest number were from 21 to 30 years with 83,700, followed by 31 to 40 years (46,908), 11 to 20 years (34,585), 51 to 60 years (12,772), 61 to 70 years (3,323 people) and others (3,512).
Lee said the Chinese were highest with 52.3% followed by the Indians with 23.9% and the Malays with 20.7%.
The rise in the number of donors was due to increased awareness among the donors and beneficiaries on the importance of organ donation to patients. - Bernama
