BUKIT MERTAJAM: A Valentine's Day tragedy struck a family at Taman Wah Seng in Alma, here, following a lovers' quarrel.

A 24-year-old clerk was stabbed thrice with a knife by her boyfriend during a heated argument at her family home.

He then stabbed himself four times.

Tan Ching Chin died on the spot while the 31-year-old man is in critical condition in the district hospital.

Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mazlan Kesah confirmed the incident.

It is learnt that the argument took place around 8.45am yesterday after Tan came out of the shower and was prompted by a telephone call that she received from an unidentified man.

A family member said that only Tan's mother and a maid were in the house at the time.

The maid, on hearing the commotion, went to check and found Tan lying motionless and naked in a pool of blood while the boyfriend was struggling with his wounds. The maid alerted the mother who was asleep.

It is also learnt that the man, who works as an engineer in Kuala Lumpur, had known Tan for six months.

They were close to the extent that he visited her home to celebrate Chinese New Year together. They had seemed happy together and were often in a jovial mood, according to family members.

The family claimed her body, minus her eyes, after a post-mortem at the Seberang Jaya Hospital. The spirited lass had earlier pledged to donate her eyes after her death.

She died from stab wounds in her chest and abdomen.

Police have recovered the knife.
