Singaporeans flock to JB for reunion dinners

JOHOR BARU: Many Singaporeans are opting to have their Chinese New Year reunion dinner in Johor Baru as it is cheaper compared to restaurants in the island republic.

Pekin Sutera Restaurant supervisor Yu Siew Lang said a majority of the 200 bookings received for the eve of the Lunar New Year were from Singaporeans.

“They are mostly regular customers who have their reunion dinners at our restaurant every year and they usually make the bookings one year in advance,” she said yesterday.

She said many had also already made bookings for next year’s reunion dinner.

“They want to make sure that they get the best seats in the house,” she said, adding that the restaurant’s set reunion dinners were priced at between RM689 and RM3,000.

Grand Straits Garden restaurant manager Jenica Yong said many Singaporeans picked Johor Baru to have their reunion dinner as a dinner in a Singapore restaurant could cost twice as much. Yong said the restaurant was fully booked since December last year.
