Rape of native land displaces orang asli


GUA MUSANG: Like all orang asli villages here, signs put up at Kampung Sendrod declare the area to be a “native and roaming territory of the Orang Asal”.

The signs are the only reminders that the land around the homes was once full of montane forests, where the orang asli foraged for food and herbs to make medicines.

Penned in by vegetable farms on all sides, the abodes of thousands of orang asli in Lojing Highlands are today a pitiful sight.

It has become a familiar refrain of helplessness and anger for Kampung Sendrod village chief Alan Alang, 59, who charges that the authorities had never recognised their ancestral rights to their land.
