IGP: Op Selamat II helped reduce road accident and crime rate

KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said the advocacy and continuous enforcement approach has reduced the crime rate and road accidents during the Chinese New Year period.

"The two week Op Selamat II recorded 11 percent drop or less 124 cases of housebreaking from the 1,110 recorded last year to 986 cases.

“There was also a drop in road accidents with 16,287 cases, less 767 than the 17,054 recorded during Op Sikap 25 last year,” he said on Wednesday.

However, the number of fatal road accidents rose to 177 cases with 194 deaths compared to 155 cases and 168 deaths during Op Sikap 25.

A majority of the victims were motorcyclists and pillion riders with 109 or 56 percent of the total deaths recorded.

This is 17 more than the 92 deaths recorded during Op Sikap 25.
