Ex-ISA detainee and teacher deny inciting terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR: Former ISA detainee Yazid Sufaat and religious teacher Halimah Hussein have claimed trial to the charge of inciting terrorism.
The duo had their charges re-read in the High Court yesterday after the case was transferred here from the Ampang magistrate’s court.
High Court judge Justice Kamardin Hashim fixed May 20 for trial.
The court also fixed Feb 25 to hear the habeas corpus application of cafeteria helper Muhammad Hilmi Hasim, who was also detained with the duo on Feb 7.
Hilmi, who has not been charged, filed the application through his adoptive mother Rahamah Abdul Majid, at the High Court criminal registry here on Monday.
All three were arrested under the new Special Offences (Security Measures) Act.
Yazid, who operates a cafeteria at the court complex here, was charged together with Halimah with committing the offence at a house in Ampang between August and October 2012.
The two are alleged to have “threatened the public in Syria” with these acts, the penalty for which is up to 30 years’ jail and a fine under the Penal Code.
Yazid’s counsel Amer Hamzah Arshad informed the court on Wednesday that he would be applying to strike out or permanently stay the charges.
The prosecution was led by Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Zakaria with DPPs Ishak Mohd Yusof and Dusuki Mokhtar.
Halimah was represented by Datuk Yusoff Zainal Abiden, while Fadiah Nadwa Fikri was counsel for Hilmi.
Yazid was detained under the ISA in 2001 for seven years on suspicion of being involved with the Jemaah Islamiyah militant group.
