SEPANG: A total of RM8.2mil worth of drugs has been seized from drug mules at the two international airports here since Jan 1.

KLIA Customs director Badaruddin Mohamed Rafik said the drugs – methamphetamine totalling 42.23kg – were seized in nine busts at KLIA and the LCCT.

“We arrested a total of eight suspects from Nigeria, India, Iran, Thailand and Indonesia,” Badaruddin told a press conference at the Customs Complex here.

He said that in all cases, the drugs were found in hidden compartments of their luggage.

The latest case involved a mother and daughter from Iran, who tried to smuggle 6.76kg of methamphetamine worth RM1.28mil.

The pair were stopped by Customs officers after arriving at KLIA on Feb 15.

“Based on our initial findings, the suspects had travelled to Malaysia together three times since 2011,” he said.

According to Badaruddin, the drugs were found hidden in the bottom of their bags.

He added that the 46-year-old mother was a beautician while her 25-year-old daughter worked with her.
