Lima defence show unlikely to coincide with polls, says EC chairman Aziz
LANGKAWI: Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof expects Parliament to be dissolved after the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (Lima) 2013 exhibition.
Lima 2013 will be held for five days from March 26 to 30.
Abdul Aziz was commenting on rumours that Lima exhibitors will withdraw if the Dewan Rakyat is dissolved before the event.
Abdul Aziz said he personally felt it would not be a problem to hold Lima 2013 before the general election.
"Lima 2013 will be held for five days from March 26 to 30 and the plan was made two years ago. The Dewan Rakyat still has until April 30," he told reporters after briefing and presenting credentials to election managers for Perlis, Kedah and Penang.
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had been the Defence Minister and, thus, was aware of the importance of the foreign investments generated from Lima 2013.
He added that the Prime Minister also knew when best to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat and when to organise Lima.
"To me it is very unlikely for LIMA to coincide with the election," he said.
The EC gazetted the fourth quarter of the 2012 electoral roll, containing names of 243,204 new voters and 51,188 voters who had changed their polling centres on Friday.
EC public relations officer Sabri Said said in a statement the gazette was for applications for new registration or change of polling centres involved in any objection.
For applications whose names were objected, the EC will postpone the validation until public investigations are completed.
During the display period of the supplementary electoral roll from Jan 17 to 30, the EC received 630 objections involving 19 parliamentary election divisions, all of which have been resolved.
"The number of registered voters nationwide, after combining the fourth quarter electoral roll and the 2011 Master Electroral Roll, is 13,291,385 people," Sabri said.
Those who would like to check their status can call the EC office at 03-8885 6565, visit www.spr.gov.my or SMS by typing SPR SEMAK and IC NUMBER to 15888.
