Bus driver jailed and fined over cop’s death

JOHOR BARU: A 48-year-old female bus driver was jailed four years for reckless driving and causing the death of a traffic policeman on duty.

Wong Lin Chan was found guilty of driving a Singapore-registered intercity bus in a dangerous manner and ramming into Kpl Ismayuddin Ismail, 50, at the CIQ complex heading towards Malaysia at 11.35pm in March 22, last year.

Wong’s lawyer Chew Pong Him pleaded for a lighter sentence as Wong had to care for her old and sick mother as her sister had a family of her own.

Magistrate Maslinda Selamat also ordered Wong to pay a fine of RM10,000 in default six months’ jail and a RM10,000 compensation to the victim’s family in default four months’ jail.

Maslinda allowed Wong a stay of execution pending her appeal against the decision but set bail at RM15,000.

She also ordered Wong’s driving licence to be suspended for five years from yesterday.

Kpl Ismayuddin was hit by the bus and died on the spot due to severe head and abdominal injuries. The father of five, from Felda New Zealand in Maran, Pahang, served in the police force for 20 years.
