Another run, another row in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan has hit out at Pakatan Rakyat for keeping quiet over a run scheduled on Chap Goh Meh.

The 10km half-marathon is organised by Penang PKR chief Datuk Mansor Othman, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister I.

State Barisan Nasional Youth chief Oh Tong Keong questioned why Komtar assemblyman Ng Wei Aik has remained silent, although Chap Goh Meh is important to the Chinese.

“We have nothing against the event but why didn’t Ng make a stand against the run?” he asked at a press conference held at the Barisan headquarters in Jalan Datuk Keramat here yesterday.

Last month, Ng, the Penang DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) chairman, had demanded that organisers of the Penang Run 2013 call off the event as it was held on the same day as Thaipusam.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy had also slammed the organisers, saying it was “insensitive” to organise the event on the same day as Thaipusam.

The Penang Run 2013 was organised by Tanjung Social Club and Penang Forward Sports Club.

Oh accused Ng of practising “double-standards”.

“He (Ng) did not respond in an extreme manner this time around even though the run will be held on the same day as Chap Goh Meh.

Mansor and state PKR vice-chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussein could not be reached for comments.
