KUALA LUMPUR: Small-scale farmers operating plots smaller than 2.4 hectares will receive aid in the form of fertiliser, seeds and equipment under a RM28mil allocation announced by the Prime Minister to help boost their incomes.

The recipients will be selected from among the more than 500,000 members of the Farmers' Organisation Authority of Malaysia as well as 6,000 members of Kor Tani, a body of young farmers between 16 and 40 years old.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the aid was in recognition of the farming community's contributions towards attaining a sustainable supply of food in the country.

"Agriculture is a very important sector for our country and cannot be allowed to remain without proper assistance because we want to see this sector remain vibrant and dynamic," Najib said when launching FOA's new tower here.

The Prime Minister said that besides providing continuous assistance in aid and subsidies, which totaled RM2.4bil last year, raising the incomes of the farmers and fishermen will require new and innovative ideas which can boost their productivity.
