BUKIT MERTAJAM: Eight people, alleged members of a baby-for-sale syndicate, have been further remanded to assist in the case where 21 babies and children were rescued last week.

They were among 43 people nabbed by police in a joint operation in seven states. The others had been released under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

It is learnt that should the eight not be charged on Wednesday, police would seek for their remand to be further extended for the investigations.

It was reported that the babies and children aged between a month and nine years were rescued in Penang (two), Selangor (seven), Johor (three), Perak (three), Pahang (one), Negri Sembilan (one) and Kuala Lumpur (four).

The syndicate's bust came less than two months after police nabbed 36 people from Kedah, Perak and here during a month-long operation that ended on Jan 24 and rescued 10 children aged between two months and eight years.

The syndicate has been active since 2009.
