Pakatan plans to phase out NEP gradually

By MARTIN CARVALHO

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rakyat will gradually do away with the New Economic Policy (NEP) if it takes over Putrajaya, said PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli.

He said this would be achieved as the nation moved away from race-based economic policies.

"We will phase out the NEP as we move towards need-based policies," he said during a briefing on Pakatan Rakyat's election manifesto here Wednesday.

He said Pakatan would focus its economic policies and economic restructuring towards the RM4,000 per household income target under its manifesto.

However, he clarified that only areas under the NEP that led to abuse and corruption would be done away with.

He defended Pakatan's manifesto as being inclusive of all Malaysians and said it must be read together with other relevant Pakatan policy documents including the earlier Buku Jingga.
