Lynas produces first batch of rare earth products for customers

By ONG HAN SEAN

KUANTAN: Lynas Corporation has announced that its refinery here has produced its first rare earth products for customers.

On Jan 7, the Australian mining company had said the commissioning of the cracking and leaching rare earth extraction units at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant in Gebeng was successful.

It said that some issues were encountered but these had not materially impacted the overall production schedule.

"Following commissioning of the cracking and leaching circuits, the company has been working through early stage production issues that are typical for any start up of a new plant. Our focus is on increasing throughput and optimising use of equipment," it said in the statement released Wednesday.

Lynas added that the recovery rates from the cracking units continued to be high, in excess of 90% of the contained rare earth oxides (REO).

It also said the company's target for the phase 1 nameplate production capacity of 11,000 tonnes per annum REO remained at second quarter of 2013.
