Floods in Terengganu closes 27 schools


KUALA TERENGGANU: Floods that hit the state on Tuesday closed 27 schools on Wednesday affecting 13,373 students.

Terengganu State Education Department deputy director Hashim Mohd Zain said they comprised 14 in Besut, eight in Hulu Terengganu and five in Setiu.

He said the affected schools were either flooded, turned into relief centres or still being cleaned after the floods.

The flooded schools included Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bukit Payong, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Payong, SK Pasir Akar and SK Darau, all in Besut.

In Setiu, SK Kampung Bukit, SK Sungai Las, SK Langkap, SK Kampung Buluh and SK Kampung Besut were closed, while in Hulu Terengganu they included SK Bukit Tadok, SK Matang, SK Teris, SK Tengkawang and SK Jeneris.

Those still being used as temporary relief centres were SK Anak Ikan in Setiu, and SK Seri Payong and SK Tenang in Besut.

Meanwhile, the main roads leading to SK Kuar, SK Felda Tersat, SMK Menerong, SMK Matang and SMK Jenerih were cut off by waters two-metre high.
