Come in purple for walk to mark International Women’s Day

PUTRAJAYA: The 1Million Women Purple Walk (1MWPurpleWalk) will be held simultaneously in all states on March 10 to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will flag off the Putrajaya leg of the event at 4pm.

“We want people to express solidarity with the Government’s commitment to empower women and to celebrate the success of Malaysian women in various fields.

“Compared to many other countries, Malaysia has achieved a lot. For example, about 63% of our university students are women,” said Women, Family and Community Development deputy secretary-general (strategic development) Datuk Dr Harjeet Singh during a press conference here on Tuesday.

He also expressed support for the IWD’s theme this year, “The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum”, which was in line with the ministry’s vision to pursue gender equality and a caring community.

Najib, who heads the ministry, is also expected to launch the 1Malaysia Komuniti Perwani programme on the same day.

It is an initiative to form 10,000 women’s network groups committed to supporting neighbourhood and community initiatives.

There is no joining fee for the 1MWPurple Walk, but participants are encouraged to don purple apparel or accessories.

Females above the age of 15 can attend while men are welcome, too.
