KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese New Year festive cheer kicked off with a bang for Petronas as it celebrated its new campaign with a lion dance performance outside the Petronas Twin Towers.

The five “lions”, in yellow, purple, orange, green and red, made a majestic sight as the dancers leaped from pole to pole in a jaw-dropping routine.

The multi-racial troupe ended the performance by unfurling long banners which conveyed Petronas' festive wishes.

Each banner and lion represented one of the “five pillars of happiness” that comprised auspicious blessings health, tranquility, luck, wealth and longevity.

The special guests, 28 children from Rumah Keluarga Kami in Kajang, had a blast as they received ang pows and Mandarin oranges from Petronas group corporate affairs division senior general manager Datuk Mohammad Medan Abdullah.

They came from one of the six charity homes that will benefit from Petronas' Chinese New Year campaign Five Pillars of Happiness: A Celebration of Culture and Tradition.

Their caretaker, Ruby Elizabeth Roy said: “Some of our kids have been abandoned; others are staying here because they come from single parent households.

“We believe in building them up so they will become good people when they grow up, people who will give back to society.”

The home, she said, was in the midst of expansion plans so that it could accommodate more children.

Campaign ambassadors Hitz.fm DJ Jin Lim (Jinnyboy) and 988FM DJ Cheryl Lee said they would spread the word to get maximum support for the campaign using their social media accounts.

“I'm going to promote this on Facebook. I hope everyone participates for this cause.

“All it takes is 10 seconds and you don't even contribute your own money,” Lee said.

Lim said he would leverage on his YouTube page, which had over 134,000 subscribers, to sign Petronas' pledge.

“My mom taught me that helping the less fortunate is a must,” he said. “We should always give back.”
