GEORGE TOWN: The Federal Government announced a RM1.03mil allocation to residents in the Jelutong Parliamentary Constituency to repair homes and help traders.

The announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin during a meeting with the people in the constituency brought cheers to about 5,000 people here Tuesday.

Muhyiddin said the allocation was approved not because of the general election, but after being informed by the Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Teng Chang Yeow on the needs and problems faced by the people in the area.

He said RM600,000 was allocated to repair facilities at eight low cost flats in Taman Desa Green, RM200,000 for nine religious organisations and RM200,000 to repair 100 run-down houses in the area.

Another RM30,000 was also allocated for traders in the Batu Lanchang, Pasir Jelutong and Jalan Perak Market areas.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin regarded the presence of about 5,000 people, the majority of them Chinese as a solid support for BN.

He also wished Happy Chinese New Year to the Chinese community and hoped the year of the water snake would bring profits and benefits, and expressed confidence that Malaysia would continue to progress and achieve bigger successes this year. - Bernama
