Robber jumps into sea to evade arrest

GEORGE TOWN: A robber, desperate to evade arrest after a robbery at a Tanjung Tokong grocery shop, jumped into the sea near Persiaran Gurney, here Wednesday.

North East police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said the suspect had pretended to buy a drink at the shop before grabbing some money from the cash register and taking off on a motorbike with his accomplice, during the 2.13pm incident.

"Two traffic cops, who happened to be patrolling the area, gave chase and cornered the suspects at Persiaran Gurney and detained one of them," he said.

The other suspect jumped into the shallow sea and police had to use a boat to capture him, said Gan.

The suspects, 25 and 23, were not permanently employed and one of them tested positive for drugs, he added. - Bernama
