PUTRAJAYA: Graduates from local universities need to be more competitive as the country becomes more liberalised, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

"We have noticed that multi-national companies (MNCs) have a tendency to take in students who graduated from foreign universities.

"There's nothing wrong with this, but we want to give local graduates the opportunity to work at MNCs as well.

"This is why we have provided re-training programmes, to ensure that they are able to gain the relevant skills," he told reporters after attending the Graduate Career Accelerated Programme (GCAP) graduation ceremony here Friday.

Khaled added that the current graduate employment rate, based on the ministry's Graduates Tracer Study, is around 72%.
