Malaysia Chinese New Year open house this Feb 16

KUALA LUMPUR: Information, Communications and Culture Secretary-General Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf today officiated the pre-launch of the Malaysia Chinese New Year Open House 2013 at Pusat Bandar Puchong, near here.

The Malaysia Chinese New Year Open House 2013 (MRTM), to be held on Feb 16, is scheduled to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak at 8pm.

Kamaruddin said the ministry was organising the function so that all Malaysians could join in the festivities and joy of celebrating Chinese New Years with the Chinese community nationwide.

"This Chinese New Year, the government and non-governmental organisations (NGO) have carried out programmes including gotong-royong to bring all races closer," he said.

The celebrations to be held nationwide also hopes to increase awareness among Malaysians that Chinese New Year is the same as other celebrations.

During the launch, Kamaruddin distributed oranges, ang pows and invitations to the function to over a thousand people at the event.

Meanwhile, locals welcomed the government's idea to hold a Malaysia open house in their area.

A resident, Lim Yee Wai, 35, said he was proud that his neighbourhood was chosen as one of the hosts this year and said he couldn't believe the government gave attention to the area. - Bernama
