An ‘old friend’ arrests hubby again
Brave faces: Lawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri (right) together with Chomel and daughter Soraya (second and third from left) talking to reporters before proceedings at the Ampang magistrate’s court began. KUALA LUMPUR: The surprise of seeing a familiar face turned into shock for Chomel Mohamad when she watched police detain her husband. Again.
Chomel, 48, was preparing for the lunch crowd on Wednesday at her food stall in the Jalan Duta court complex when she saw the police officer who had arrested her husband Yazid Sufaat in 2001.
“I was excited to see an old friend,” said Chomel when met at the Ampang court complex on Friday.
Chomel said a team of about 15 men arrested Yazid and an employee, Mohd Hilmi Hasim.
“We were surrounded by policemen who handcuffed my husband and Hilmi,” said Chomel.
Yazid had been detained in 2001 under the ISA for suspected links to the Jemaah Islamiyah terror network. Chomel was also detained under the ISA in April 2002, but was released after two months.
Chomel, who has been running the food stall since 2007, said Yazid started helping her at the cafetria in 2009.
The couple hired Mohd Hilmi six months ago.
