15 undeclared galvanised iron pipes seized

TAIPING: The Perak Customs Depart-ment has confiscated 15 containers of galvanised iron pipes worth about RM1.95mil at the North Butterworth container port in Penang.

State Customs director Datuk Ab Hamid Salleh said Customs personnel seized the containers on Feb 3 after acting on a tip-off.

“The importer had made false declaration on the pipes to avoid paying duties and taxes. The importer tried to pass of the pipe-filled containers as cardboard rolls, which is not taxable and do not require any import permit,” he said yesterday.

Ab Hamid explained that galvanised iron pipes could not be imported without a permit from the International Trade and Industry Ministry.

He said the pipes, which weighed about 390 metric tons, involved an unpaid duty of about RM390,000.
