YONG PENG: Police arrested a 36-year-old jobless man, who allegedly broke into a shop in Taman Kota here, while leaving his wife and six-month-old baby in his car.

Batu Pahat district police chief ACP Din Ahmad said the suspect broke into a car accessory shop about 4am Friday and stole about RM3,000 worth of batteries and car parts.

He said two policemen in a patrol car saw the suspect driving out of the lane where the shop was located.

The police patrol car followed him but the suspect sped up when he realised he was being followed.

The car exited the toll and went towards the south and more patrol cars joined in the car chase.

“We managed to block the car at KM97,” ACP Din said.

He said police found the stolen goods and some equipment such as a spanner and hammer, believed to be used as tools for break-in, in the car.

Police also arrested the suspect's 33-year-old wife to assist in their investigations.

ACP Din said the couple's baby boy would be handed over to their family.

We are also investigating if the suspect was involved in other theft cases, he said, adding that the couple had been remanded until Monday.

The case is being investigated under Section 456 of the Penal Code for burglary, he added.
