KUALA LUMPUR: Strong winds and rain brought down a tree that crashed onto a house and killed a woman in Kampung Baru.

Over 27 cars were damaged by fallen trees uprooted by the storm that lashed the city Tuesday evening.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said the 52-year-old Indonesian woman died of her injuries after she was pinned under the giant tree in her squatter house at about 4.40pm.

“When we arrived in Jalan Sultan Sulaiman, we were informed that a woman was in the squatter house which was crushed by the tree,” he said adding rescuers took about an hour to remove the woman's body.

Mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib said the squatter houses should not have been built in the area.

He said about 20 cars were damaged by a fallen tree near the AIA building in Jalan Ampang and several in Jalan Haji Taib 4 and Jalan Ipoh.

The roof of a restaurant was also blown off along Jalan Kampung Baru.

“Luckily the restaurant was closed at the time and no casualties were reported,” the mayor said.
