By SHAUN HO

LAHAD DATU: The soldier who died in a road accident Tuesday was a passenger and not the driver of the truck involved, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib clarified Wednesday.

He said the driver was injured, and added that the accident occurred around 7.30am on KM37 of the Lahad Datu-Tanduo road.

The victim, Pbt Ahmad Farhan Ruslan, 21, was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal Wednesday, along with another soldier, Pbt Ahmad Hurairah Ismail, who was killed in a gunbattle with Sulu terrorists on Tuesday.

It was earlier reported that a soldier transporting supplies died in a road accident after losing control of the truck, while heading to Bandar Cenderawasih in the Felda Sahabat region, from Lahad Datu town.

"Police will investigate the accident under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," Hamza told reporters during the morning press conference here.
