CM: Kapit needs regional master plan for systematic development

KAPIT: Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has proposed setting up a committee to look into drawing the regional master plan so that Kapit division would be systematically developed by 2030.

He said the members should comprise Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Masing and all Barisan elected representatives from Kapit, Song and Belaga.

Speaking at a leader-meets-the-people session and the launching of the RM116mil Kemantan-Kapit transmission line at the Civic Centre here yesterday, he said through the committee, decisions on how best to develop Kapit Division for the long-term benefit of the people could be held.

Taib said the master plan was important as Kapit could serve as an “operation centre and springboard” to Tunoh in the Balleh area where a new township had been proposed to be created.

Besides that, he said, it would also complement the planned Balleh hydroelectric dam project.

Taib said he saw Tunoh as the potential place for the future development of the division as the land there was suitable for agricultural and tourism purposes.

He said the rough geographical terrain of the division posed an obstacle to the development of Kapit.

Nonetheless, he said Kapit also had its strength in that like the upper Baram, it could also support the construction of a hydroelectric dam which could help accelerate its deve-lopment tempo.

On the coming 13th general election, he called on the people to continue supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who had contributed immensely to the deve-lopment of Sarawak since he was made prime minister four years ago.

Najib had allocated some RM3.5bil worth of projects to the state which reflected his sincerity and concern for Sarawakians, Taib said.

On Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi’s request for for a multi-storey carpark to be built in Kapit, Taib said a low-interest loan scheme would be given to Kapit District Council to enable it to take up the project.
