Think before embarking on undersea tunnel project, Lim told
BALIK PULAU: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop has urged the Penang Chief Minister to fikir dulu (think first) before going ahead with the undersea tunnel project.
“Unlike Barisan that does proper planning and consultation with experts in considering the pros and cons of a project, Lim Guan Eng has not thought through the long-term effects of such a project on the Penang Port,” he said. “We want to make the port the best in the region (but) once the tunnel is built, can big ships dock here?''
Nor Mohamed called on Penangites to give Barisan a chance to govern the state again as the coalition practised “long-term planning and would give attention to all”.
“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak works 18 hours a day and is a very sincere leader. Please, show him your support and vote in a new state government that can work well with the federal administration and bring more development for Penang,” he said during the Teluk Kumbar-Pekan Genting road straightening and widening project's handing-over ceremony here yesterday.
He said the Federal Government had spent RM1bil to disperse and improve traffic flow in anticipation of the Second Penang Bridge's opening. “At the latest, the bridge will open in November.''
State Barisan chief Teng Chang Yeow, who was also present, slammed Lim, claiming that the decision to build the tunnel was made without conducting research and traffic surveys.
He also dismissed Lim's allegation that the previous administration had sold land for RM1.
“Lim has accused Barisan of selling reclaimed land at RM1, which is incorrect,” he said.
On Thursday, Lim had called on Teng to explain why Barisan sold 380ha of reclaimed land in Tanjung Pinang at only RM1 per sq ft.
He told an online portal that payment for the RM6.3bil undersea tunnel and road projects, awarded to Consortium Zenith BUCG Sdn Bhd, would be in the form of 44ha of reclaimed land in Tanjung Pinang.
The projects consist of a 6.5km Gurney Drive-Bagan Ajam undersea tunnel, a 4.2km Gurney Drive-Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Bypass, a 4.6km Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu-Bandar Baru Air Itam Bypass and a 12km road connecting Tanjung Bungah with Teluk Bahang.
