SUPP equipping members with vital information to counter Opposition

KUCHING: SUPP is in the process of equipping its members with important information as part of its publicity effort to counter the Opposition in the general election.

Party president Datuk Seri Peter Chin said these publicity materials would contain information, arguments and issues to be highlighted.

“The party’s central publicity is preparing these materials to be distributed so that our members know more about federal and state issues.

“We are working closely with the Barisan Nasional headquarters on this to show to the voters that the Opposition don’t really have a comprehensive and workable manifesto,” he told reporters after chairing a Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting here yesterday.

“We are looking at the (recently launched) Opposition manifesto and are prepared to answer it.

“We feel that it is not realistic and it is just to fish for votes.”

Chin said the party was determined to do well in all its seven seats - Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Serian, Sarikei, Sibu, Lanang and Miri — in the general election.

“In the meeting, we discussed our strategies for the election. We also discussed how to get our members and party workers to be more active,” he said.

Chin was optimistic with the party’s chances when he said it received overwhelming response in its recent Chinese New Year dinner held at MJC commercial centre which was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“The reception by 10,000 people was beyond our expectation.

“We are encouraged by this and we hope that it will be translated into votes,” he said.

“However, we are realistic about our chances.

“We do not want to be over-confident. We will work hard for every vote.”

In the 2008 general election, the party won all its allocated seats except Bandar Kuching where its former youth chief Alan Sim lost to DAP’s Chong Chieng Jen.

The party suffered another defeat to DAP when it failed to retain Sibu in a by-election held in 2010 following the demise of its incumbent the late Datuk Robert Lau.

In the 2011 state election, the party was nearly wiped out when it was thrashed in 13 of the 19 seats it contested.

Some of its heavyweights like former president Tan Sri Dr George Chan, treasurer Datuk David teng and former vice-president Datuk Tiong Thai King were the casualties.
