Apartment dwellers not responsible

I OFFER my deepest condolences to the family of late Liew Kum Thong who was brutally and senselessly stabbed to death by an apartment resident over alleged non-payment of maintenance fees.

This unfortunate incident brings up the attitude of many high-rise dwellers. It is the norm rather than the exception for many dwellers not to pay the maintenance fees.

There are those who have never paid their fees from day one, as well as many who have defaulted for many months.

I reckon it is not because the apartment owners cannot afford to pay but simply that they do not want to.

The usual excuse is that the maintenance services are poor.

The people who sit in the maintenance committees are doing their best. They are truly the unsung heroes.
