‘Each step a giant leap for women’

BUTTERWORTH: Aishah Siti Basri, 37, was cheerful and chirpy as she joined some 30,000 women in their grand walk to mark their special day.

Likening the event to women's progress, she said: “Every step taken was symbolic of the advancement we have made.

“It feels good knowing that our Government recognises our role and efforts,” she said at the state-level 1Million Women Purple Walk at the Politeknik Seberang Prai in Permatang Pauh, near here, yesterday.

The grounds of the polytechnic school was a sea of purple as women of all ages gathered for the event to mark International Women's Day.

Aishah's friend Anis Abdullah, 35, said the walk was a great initiative to unite women.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, who flagged off the event, said: “It gives me great pleasure to see a wave of women in purple coming together for this special occasion.”

He said the purpose of the walk was to show solidarity towards the Government's commitment in empowering the women in Malaysia and to celebrate the success of the nation's women in various sectors.

“Women today play many roles from diligent worker to dutiful wife and a caring mother,” he said, adding that women also needed proper exercise to care for their body in carrying out these roles.

“I hope this walk will inspire other programmes that focus on women's health,” said Nor Mohamed.
