KUALA LUMPUR: The well-known Pasar Raja Bot in Chow Kit here is set to get a RM200mil facelift, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Monday.

Muhyiddin said the project was part of the Government's efforts to modernise the existing market, set up in 1955, into an iconic landmark.

"The project will cover 48,000ha that will see it become a catalyst for growth for the area," he said in his speech when launching the project here.

He said the new market, scheduled for completion in 2017 and featuring a Malay architectural style, will house the existing 1,527 traders.

"The remaining lots will be offered to young entrepreneurs wishing to do business," he said, adding that the new multi-storey building would have 800 parking bays.

He said a temporary area would be set up for the affected traders, who will move into the new market in stages.

Also present at the event was Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin.
