NUJ urges cops to stop intimidation of journalist over story source
PETALING JAYA: The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the police to stop intimidating a journalist into revealing her source.
NUJ president Chin Sung Chew said it was improper for the police to ask a journalist to reveal a source.
"It is journalists' privilege to uphold the principle of protecting their sources, where sources are not revealed, especially in a controversial story, in order to protect their identity," the NUJ said in a statement uploaded on a news portal Monday.
On Sunday, Bukit Aman allegedly demanded that the journalist from The Star reveal the source quoted in an article published in October last year on two Malaysians detained in Lebanon over suspicion of links with the Al-Qaeda terrorist group.
The questioning of the journalist was related to police investigations on another Malaysian facing terrorism charges under the new Security Offences (Special Measures) Act.
