None in family discussed purchase with me, Shahrizat tells court

KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil testified that none of her family members discussed with her the purchase of the One Menerung condominium units, the High Court here heard.
However, she said she was aware of the purchase after an allegation made in respect of the National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) that money from the Government was used to buy the units.
“I became aware of the purchase when NFCorp became an issue,” she said in reply to a question by PKR strategic director Mohd Rafizi Ramli counsel Ranjit Singh.
Responding to another question by Ranjit, Shahrizat said she did not know that RM81mil was transferred to the National Meat and Livestock Corporation (NMLC) from NFCorp to buy the condominium units.
“I am not part of the NFCorp and it is unfair of you to ask this question,” she said in reply to a question whether NMLC bought the units when they prepared the civil suit.
The former Women, Family and Community Development Minister was giving her testimony in the hearing of her suit against Rafizi and PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin yesterday.
Shahrizat also said they needed to ask the NFCorp chairman how the NMLC was associated with the NFCorp.
She also told Ranjit that she had seen an agreement between the Government and the NFCorp before making her statement of claim against Rafizi.
In the lawsuit filed on Jan 19, Shahrizat said Rafizi and Zuraida started holding a series of press conferences in various locations, including the Parliament lobby, in an orchestrated attack against NFC, her husband and family.
The former minister is seeking an injunction to restrain the two PKR leaders from making further statements as well as costs, interests and others deemed fit by the court.
Rafizi, in his defence, said his statement on Nov 8 last year constituted fair comment on a matter of public interest and that he would rely on a qualified privilege.
Rafizi filed a counter-claim on March 8 against Shahrizat over her alleged defamatory remarks that implied he was a traitor.
He accused Shahrizat of embarking on a personal and vindictive attack against him in her opening address at the Wanita Umno general assembly on Nov 30 last year.
Lead counsel Datuk Seri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah acted for Shahrizat.
The hearing before High Court judge Judicial Commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera continues.
