PETALING JAYA: An investment company is crying foul after the ownership of its land in Kuala Muda, Kedah, was transferred to an individual without its consent and knowledge.

This has thrown a spanner into the company’s plans to build houses on the 16.27ha land.

“We may lose our property if the land has been sold off by those trying to pass off as the landowner,” said the company’s legal officer, known only as Ms Lim.

She said the Kuala Lumpur-based company discovered that the ownership status had been tampered with after it conducted a land search on the property on Jan 28.

“We found that the ownership was transferred to an individual using a fraudulent court order on Aug 12 last year,” Lim told The Star.

She said that when the company contacted the law firm named in the court order, the firm denied acting for the individual in preparing the court order.

The company then lodged a police report.

The company had also checked with a local bank, which acted as the chargee for the property, but the bank denied receiving any notice from the Kedah Land and Mines Department on any change of ownership.

The company then lodged a police report on Feb 6 at the Sri Petaling police station.

Lim said the company hoped to warn the public about such fraudulent practices and advised people to conduct regular land searches on their properties.

“Why didn’t the department send us a notice if it was going to change the ownership? Also, how could it have accepted a court order without checking its authenticity?” she asked.

She said the company’s lawyers had placed a private land caveat on the property to prevent the ownership of the land from being transferred.

The Kedah Commercial Crime Investigation Department confirmed receiving the report and has requested the complainant to provide the police with details.

An official from the Kedah Land and Mines Department said it had also received a complaint letter from the company.

“We are currently monitoring this case,” said the official.
