KOTA BARU: The branding of Umno as communists by PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat is an inverted fatwa (edict), said Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said it was a norm for Pakatan Rakyat leaders, especially those from PAS, to label people with hurtful and unsupported remarks for their political expediency.

“But people, especially the Muslims, are smarter now and they will not easily believe whatever PAS leaders say.

“Branding Umno as communists is way off tangent and now PAS leaders have lost their credibility,” he told reporters after attending a 1Malaysia people's gathering at the Rural Transformation Centre here yesterday.

Muhyiddin was commenting on Nik Aziz's statement at the recent Pakatan Rakyat convention in Shah Alam, likening Umno as communist for rejecting Islam.

The Kelantan Mentri Besar had claimed that Umno's version of Islam was unsuitable for Malaysia because the country had a multi-racial population.

Present at the 1Malaysia gathering were Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamad and his deputy Datuk Awang Adek Hussin.

Muhyiddin, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said that if PAS was truly serious in its struggle to set up an Islamic state, why was hudud not included in Pakatan's manifesto that was unveiled recently?

He questioned why PAS had kept quiet on the matter when it had always professed that its struggle was to implement hudud laws if it came to power.

Earlier in his speech, Muhyiddin said the people of Kelantan should give the mandate to Barisan Nasional in the coming general election to enable the state to progress.

“The state administration, which can't see eye-to-eye with the Federal Government, will become the main obstacle to efforts to develop Kelantan, especially when it involves land,” he said.
