Anxious moments for injured commando's family

SANDAKAN: For hours on Friday, Kpl Azman Ampong's family was gripped by anxiety over the safety of the police commando.

The family only settled down after Azman himself contacted them to say that he was only injured in the Lahad Datu shootout between police commandos and armed intruders claiming to be the Sulu Royal Army.

Azman's mother-in-law Nurni Rais, 60, said she was shocked to learn from news broadcasts and Facebook that Azman was killed in the shootout with the intruders who had been occupying the seaside village of Tanduo since early Feb.

Just before Friday prayers, the family had received word from Azman's wife that her husband was injured in the skirmish.

"We became very anxious after hearing the news on television," she told reporters at her home in Kampung Tinosa 2, here.

Azman, who is from Semporna, Sabah, was one of three police commandos injured in the gun battle which took the lives of Insp Zulkifli Mamat, 29, and Kpl Sabaruddin Daud, 46; as well as 12 of the Sulu gunmen.

He was wounded in the back, buttocks and thighs.

Azman is married to Marina Djapar, 34, and they have four children.

In LAHAD DATU, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman visited the police commandos injured in the shootout.

The commandos, Cpl Mohd Tarmizi Hashim, 32, and Cpl Azman Ampang, 39, are recovering at the Lahad Datu Hospital. - Bernama
