Slain commando laid to rest in Besut

BESUT: About 2,000 people paid tribute to fallen commando Insp Zulkifli Mamat was laid to rest at the Gong Bayor muslim cemetery here.

Police officers and villagers joined Zulkifli's family members as they paid their last respects to the 29-year-old commando, who was slain in a battle with Sulu gunmen in Kampung Tanduo in Lahad Datu, Sabah on Friday.

Family and some friends wept throughout the ceremony.

Zulkifli leaves behind wife Noraziah Nor, 29, and two sons Mohammad Akmaluddn, 4, and Mohammad Akhil, 1.

Noraziah, a school teacher based in Tanjung Rambutan, is also pregnant with the couple's third child.

Among those who attended the funeral were Terengganu police chief Datuk Jamshah Mustapa and his deputy, Datuk Hamzah Md Jamil and former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, who is also Jertih assemblyman

Terengganu state secretary Datuk Mazlan Ngah was also present at the funeral to represent Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, who had earlier came to Zulkifli's residence in Kampung Kubang Ikan to convey his condolences to the family members.

Zulkifli's remains was flown from the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Subang and arrived at the Gong Kedak Royal Malaysian Air Force base at 3pm.

The remains arrived at the family home in Kampung Kubang Ikan at 4pm and then brought to the nearby Gong Bayor village cemetery for burial at 4.30pm.
