GE13: S'gor moves exco meeting to Monday, state assembly dissolution on the cards?
By TEH ENG HOCK
SHAH ALAM: Next week's Selangor exco meeting has been brought forward to Monday from Wednesday, and this has fuelled speculation that the state assembly could be dissolved then.
This exco meeting may be the final session before the state heads for the general election. The state holds its weekly exco meetings usually on Wednesday.
Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah said he was unaware of the agenda for the meeting, but conceded that it could be to discuss the dissolution.
"Maybe (it is to discuss the dissolution). The change of date was decided by the Mentri Besar.
"I've just been informed, and I don't know what will be discussed. But he already said it will be done this month," he said.
On March 11, Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim announced that the state government would dissolve the state assembly before the end of the month, although he did not specify the date.
In February, after an audience with Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Khalid said the Ruler had no objection to an early dissolution of the state assembly.
Another state exco member, Ronnie Liu, downplayed the change of date for the exco meeting.
"You should ask the Mentri Besar. If you ask me, I'll just say that it is nothing unusual," he said, adding that the meeting was brought forward by just two days.
Selangor PAS commissioner Dr Rani Osman, who does not sit on the exco, said he was not informed about the change of date.
"Hopefully, it is a sign (that the state assembly will be dissolved). We have been waiting.
"Why else would the exco meeting be brought forward?" he asked.
The Selangor state assembly automatically expires on the midnight of April 21, exactly five years after the current assemblymen were sworn in on April 22, 2008.
The country's 13th general election is expected to be held in the coming weeks. The current Parliament held its first sitting on April 28, 2008 and automatically dissolves at midnight on April 27.
The last general election was held on March 8, 2008.
