GE13: ‘DAP can’t fool Johoreans’

PETALING JAYA: DAP's strategy to field heavyweights in Johor to win more seats will not fool voters used to their “touch and go” style, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
He said Johoreans know the Opposition, irrespective of whether they won or lost, would desert them after the elections.
Its “touch and go” style, added Dr Chua, was practised by three assemblymen Bentayan, Mengkibol and Senai and the Bakri MP over the last five years.
“While we cannot discount that certain DAP national leaders may have an aura, we still want elected representatives who are more grounded and serve the local community.
“MCA has been serving the people well since the last general election, and the voters know that,” said Dr Chua, who is also Johor MCA chairman.
He was asked to comment on the Opposition's strategy of going all out to contest in the state, including DAP's grand plan to unseat MCA elected representatives in Johor by zooming in on seven of its eight parliamentary seats.
Dr Chua said the Chinese must realise that politics was a game of numbers.
“For every seat they (DAP) win, MCA would lose one,” he said, pointing out that this would undermine the community's position.
The Chinese, he added, must know that DAP was only out to win seats, and it could not be bothered with what happens after that.
“DAP can only contest in 15 state seats against PAS' 33.
“There are 56 state seats in Johor and PAS has already declared that the Mentri Besar will be from PAS even before they win. One vote for DAP is one vote for PAS,” he said.
Dr Chua added that Johor's rapid economic development would be derailed if the Opposition managed to make inroads into the state.
Meanwhile, when asked about the Barisan Nasional candidate for Gelang Patah, Dr Chua said the media should not speculate about the issue as it was unfair to the candidate.
He added that as soon as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak agreed with the candidate list, an announcement would be made.
