Bus driver claims trial to causing death of two passengers

JAWI: A bus driver claimed trial in the magistrate's court here to a charge reckless driving resulting in deaths of two of his passengers.

Kamarruddin Derais, 51 from Kampung Sempeneh Seberang, Batu Kurau, Perak was charged with driving his bus recklessly at KM150.6 of the North-South Expressway (north bound) on December 21 last year at 6.15am.

As a result of his reckless driving, a Nurul Nadhirah Sudin, 21 and Samsiah Hasan, 23, died.

He was charged under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act which is punishable by a maximum of 10 years jail and a fine of up to RM20,000.

Magistrate Siti Salwa Jaafar set bail at RM12,000 and suspended his licence until the end of proceedings.

She then set April 2 for mention.

DPP Nur Farhana Hashim prosecuted while Kamarruddin was unrepresented.

Kamarruddin, who was in crutches with his right leg wrapped in bandages because it had to be amputated, appeared calm in court.
